Thank you for taking the time to participate in our survey identifying barriers to productivity in the engineering construction industry. The survey will help identify the most important barriers to productivity that we as an industry need to focus on immediately in order to improve the competitiveness of our industry. A follow on from this will be the set up of working groups that will focus on the areas that are identified from responses.

It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. It is very important for us to learn your opinions.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Dr Georgette Banham via the ECIA for more information on the survey and next steps at [email protected]

Thank you very much for your time and support. Please start with the survey now by clicking on the Continue button below.

* Please rank (1 [top priority] to 12 [lowest priority]) the following in order of main barriers to productivity in the project inception to site set up phases:
Contracting strategy e.g unsuitable risk allocation, late involvement of sub contractors, non integrated teams
Industrial relations issues e.g recruitment, confidence, trust, cultural awareness, support
Contract management e.g lack of understanding of conditions, unclear roles and responsibilities
Lack of awareness with regard to risk management at project and site team level e.g reporting of factors at appropriate times
Project planning e.g lack of resources, compressed time schedules, late involvement
Project organisation e.g no project induction, collaboration and communication issues
Temporary works e.g unsuitable layout, insufficient space, late involvement
Lack of consistent project management methods
Construction philosophy e.g restricted access to construction knowledge, unable to maximise off site working
Change environment e.g late changes to design, changes not made at appropriate level
Procurement strategy e.g quality issues, lack of end to end responsibility, late involvement
Lack of clarity in scope e.g information constraints

* Please rank (1 [top priority] to 10 [lowest priority]) the following in order of main barriers to productivity in the phases after initial site set up to project completion:
Work area control e.g inappropriate site layout
Installation issues e.g stacking up of trades, late changes to design on site
Lack of appropriate training e.g competence and capability
Lack of discipline e.g due to unclear demarkation lines, consistency in supervision
Lack of team building and limited project inductions
Motivation e.g bonus inconsistencies, bonuses become the norm rather than on performance
Lack of awareness with regard to risk management at project and site team level e.g reporting of factors at appropriate times
Issues between project members e.g lack of empowerment at site level
Lack of consistent project management methods
Limited time for project review / learning from close out reports e.g lack of knowledge management
