Dr. Erin Venable, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and her research team are conducting a study evaluating the impact of thermal stress on search dogs. We are reaching out to the search dog community to identify handlers interested in participating.

DATE: 1 full day during the week of April 24, 2017
LOCATION: Southern Illinois University-Carbondale
REQUIREMENTS: Live Find & HRD dogs of all training and certifications are welcome to apply. K9 teams will be offered the opportunity to train in a predominately wide area environment with access to large source human remains. Both alert station and full search scenarios will be available.

Participants will be required to participate in the following data collection:
•    Veterinary exam
•    Handler survey
•    Salivary cortisol [every ½ hour] – a swab will be placed against the inside of the dog’s mouth for ~30 seconds every ½ hour
•    Continue core temperature – at the beginning of the day dogs will be asked to swallow a small capsule (approximately the size of most antibiotic pills). This capsule will be given with a small amount of wet food to make it easy to swallow. Dogs will wear a fitted vest made out of t-shirt material that will house a monitor approximately the size of a cell phone. The capsule and monitor will connect via Bluetooth throughout the day. The capsule will naturally leave the dog within 24 in their stool.
