Exit Survey

The purpose of this study is to explore different communities' meaning(s) of education. We are inviting you to take photos and describe the meaning(s) related to where you feel like you learn the most, which may not necessarily be within school.

If you are interested in participating in this study, there are 4 parts to it:

1) A brief online survey and information session to gather a few demographic characteristics. This will involve completing a short survey about demographics (such as age, course work, etc.). Time for this should take about 5 minutes. An email will be sent to the researcher automatically to indicate you have completed the survey, and additional information will be sent to you via email from the researcher.

2) Taking photographs and submission to be completed no later than Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Participants will be asked to submit no more than 20 photos (Minimum of 2 photos per question and a Maximum of 4 photos per question) The photos will be taken to respond to the following questions:

• Where do you learn the most about other cultures?
• What do you learn about other cultures?
• How do you learn about other cultures?
• Who do you learn from about other cultures?

3) You will be asked to complete a short writing prompt for your "best" photo you have taken for each question. For any other photos taken, please given a brief (1-3 sentence description of why you took that photo). Taking the photos and completing the writing prompts should take a couple of hours max. Thoughtful, honest responses are requested for all writing prompts or descriptions.

4) Finally, after all photos and writings have been submitted, a private Facebook page will be created for the participants to join, view other participants photos and writing, and to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and potential improvements that could be made within these informal learning environments. The researcher will coordinate the Facebook page, including posting the images with their respective descriptions.

Additionally, if we do have public presentations of these photographs you will be informed and invited to attend.

We believe that the results of this study will lead to a much greater understanding of where and what people learn outside of formalized school settings. This will help community educators and partners in serving the target community by understanding what is valued, the learning processes, and how to improve institutionalized schooling based on community interests. Other benefits from this research include community empowerment, identity development, and policy development.

Participation in the current research activity is entirely voluntary. You are free to decline to participate and may stop or withdraw from the activity at any time. There is no penalty for withdrawing your participation.

If you choose to participate and complete the requirements of this study as listed above, you will be provided with the option of receiving a $10 gift card to either iTunes, Amazon or Starbucks. E-Gift cards will be emailed to the address that you provide. Also, the student who is voted on by the other participants as having the most insightful comments during the discussion phase will receive an additional $25 gift card of their choosing.

* The preferred method to complete the study involves uploading photographs and writing prompts to the researcher using a Word document. Additionally, Facebook will be used as a means of creating a closed, private group page to discuss everyone's photos and remarks. This will be an invitation-only group on Facebook, and neither the student researcher nor the principal investigator will need to send a "friend request" for you participate. The researchers will not have access to any information on your private Facebook page and they will NOT be in your friend list.

Please indicate whether you have access to both of these.
