Discuss these options carefully with your parent(s) before indicating your preferred choices. Choose something that interests you rather than picking your courses with a friend.

Students in Grade 7 take up to three complementary courses per term.

If you do not have the eligible prerequisites for Band, please do NOT choose this option in your selections. Band and French must be taken for all three terms as they are year-long courses

Note: It may be necessary to alter some option choices in September due staff changes or student interest. While every effort is made to place students in the options they choose, this is not always possible due to timetabling constraints. Please contact the school if you have concerns about your child’s options.

Course description:

BAND 7 Concert Band – 2nd Year Band
Full year - Three blocks

Prerequite: Grade 7 Band or approval of the instructor.
Fee: $30 for printed music, supplies, and use of technical book. Percussionist fee is an additional $30.
Objectives: To learn the proper use and maintenance of a musical instrument. To produce quality sounds while developing technique both as individuals as well as a group and the understanding of basic composer markings.
Homework: Students must be willing to practice at least 15 minutes, 5 times per week and attend early morning practice once a week. The students must also keep a practice log every week. Students must be committed to the band program for the whole school year.
Evaluation: Monthly playing tests, performances at school, school concerts, Music Festival and music theory.
Required Materials: Pencil, rented instrument with accessories
Band Instrument Rental: May be rented through the school for $210.00 per year (Sept. 1-June 30) of which $50.00 is a caution fee that is fully refunded upon return of the instrument in the same condition it was rented, except for normal wear and tear.
Additional Costs: Parents should expect an additional expense of approximately $200.00 for band camp which happens in early spring.

Course description:

FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE 7
Full year - Three blocks

If your child plans to do the academic stream in high school and go on to university, it is recommended that he/she continue with French.

Fee: $12.00 to cover course materials. This is a continuation of the FSL program begun in Grade 4.
Objectives: To communicate in oral and written French at an intermediate 3 level. To develop cultural and language awareness and skills. To develop general language learning skills.
Evaluation: To apply the knowledge and skills learned in the topics/themes as required in the Program of Studies. Tests, quizzes, and projects.
Required Materials: Binder, memory stick, pen, pencil, scissors, glue, pencil crayons, markers, French/English dictionary.

Art 7-1 Drawing – Level I
One trimester - One block

Fee: $5.00 to cover art materials.
Objectives: To develop basic drawing skills on two-dimensional surfaces.
Evaluation: Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills by completion of compositions and in-class performance.
Required Materials: Pencil, eraser, ruler, pencil crayons.

Art 7-2 - Introduction to Watercolour Painting Level 1
One trimester - One block
Fee: $10.00 to cover art materials.

Objectives: To develop an understanding of colour theory, and to learn basic painting skills.
Evaluation: Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills through the completion of compositions and in-class performance.
Required Materials: Pencil, eraser, ruler, pencil crayons.

Art 7-3 3D Image Art – Level I
One trimester - One block

Fee: $10.00 to cover art materials
Objectives: To develop basic sculpture techniques and creativity through the creation of three-dimensional projects.
Evaluation: Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills through the completion of projects and in-class performance.
Required Materials: Pencil, eraser, ruler, pencil crayons, glue stick, and various small materials that artists may choose to add to their pieces.

CHOIR 7 Choir (dependent on staff)
One trimester – One block

Fee: $10.00 to cover the cost of music.
Objectives: To learn the basics of choral singing: vocal skills, reading music and singing harmony.
Evaluation: Ongoing evaluation of vocal skills, participation, and performance.
Required materials: Pencil, duotang, and a great attitude!

DRAMA 7-1 Building Set Design and Mask Creation
One trimester - One block

Fee: $10.00 for classroom materials
Objectives: To foster a positive self-image in students by encouraging them to explore themselves and their creative side. Students will, through orientation, learn to follow controls and routines, laying the groundwork for study in characters and theatre. A hands-on approach to the behind the scenes of the theatre.
Evaluation: Ongoing evaluation of effort, participation and performance.
Required Materials: Writing materials and occasionally bring in props, clothing, etc. from home.


DRAMA 7-2 Introduction to Improvisation
One trimester - One block

Fee: $10.00
Objectives: To develop the whole student, emotionally, physically, intellectually, imaginatively, aesthetically, and socially, by giving form and meaning to experience through acting out.
Evaluation: Ongoing evaluation of effort, participation, and performance.
Required Materials: Come to class with a pen and occasionally bring in props found at home which enhance their in-class performance.

DRAMA 7-3 - Plays and Music Videos
One trimester - One block

Fee: $10.00
Objectives: To foster an appreciation of theatre as a cultural art form. Students will be involved in performance analysis in more depth. They will also participate in readers’ theatre and/or a variety of improv games and do a part in a play.
Evaluation: Participation, involvement and effort will be evaluated on an ongoing basis, as well as the completed projects.
Required materials: Notebook and pen

FASHION 7 Sewing Basics – Level I
One trimester - One block

Fee: $20.00 to cover the cost of classroom supplies and equipment maintenance. Project costs will be additional based on student choice.
Objectives: To demonstrate safe use and care of sewing equipment. To demonstrate basic sewing, pressing, and managing skills while assembling simple projects such as stuffed animals, pencil cases, and aprons.
Evaluation: Rubric, and self evaluation of sewing projects. Small assignments related to a variety sewing techniques and safety in the sewing lab.
Required Materials: Basic sewing kit (specific requirements to follow). Simple pattern and supplies for the project of choice to be ordered at an additional cost in class.

FOODS 7-1 Introduction to Food Basics
One trimester – One block

Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food.
Objectives: To demonstrate an understanding of kitchen safety, to practice safe handling of food, tools and equipment. To apply knowledge and management skills in the planning, preparation, and evaluation of basic foods, including snacks, entrees and convenience foods.
Evaluation: A written exam, several written assignments, rubric and self evaluation of kitchen lab work.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by fee.


FOODS 7-2 Breakfast Basics
One trimester – One block

Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food.
Objectives: To demonstrate an understanding of kitchen safety, to practice safe handling of food, tools and equipment, to gain a working knowledge of a food preparation facility, to obtain the knowledge and skills in planning, preparing, and evaluating basic breakfast foods, and describe food choices in relation to Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
Evaluation: A written exam on safe food practices, several written assignments, a rubric and self evaluation of kitchen lab work.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by fee.


FOODS 7-3 Fast and Convenience Foods
One trimester – One block

Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food.
Objectives: To analyze decisions and evaluate food choices relating to fast and convenience foods. Preparation of healthy alternatives to fast food, quick desserts and snacks.
Evaluation: Rubric and self evaluation of food labs, several written assignments and a group project culminating the course.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by the fee.

HOCKEY SKILLS 7-1 Learn to Skate/Power Skating!
First trimester – One block

Fee: $60.00 to cover ice times and consumables.
Objectives: The objective of this program is to give those students who don’t know how to skate or would like to become a better skater, the opportunity to do so. There will be a dryland aspect to this option which will help them when we get onto the ice (October). The dryland part of it will focus on stride, leg strength and core stability. The on-ice component will work on stride, starts, stops, edge work and turns.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and self evaluation of projects, demonstration of sound skating techniques. Notebook and module test.
Required materials: Participants must have a helmet, neck guard, elbow pads, skates, notebook and pens.

HOCKEY SKILLS 7-2 Hockey Basics Level I
Second trimester – One block

Fee: $100.00 to cover ice times and consumables.
Objectives: The objective of this program will be to further enhance the student’s skills and knowledge base of hockey. If you sign up for this option you should already be able to skate forwards and backwards with some proficiency. (This is not learn to skate). The areas covered in this option are as follows: skating (forward and backwards), puck control, shooting and scoring and checking.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and demonstration of sound skating techniques. Notebook and module test.
Required materials: Participants must have a helmet (with full cage), neck guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, jock/jill strap, hockey pants, shin pads, skates, hockey socks, hockey jersey, hockey stick, notebook and pens.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS 7-1 Introduction to Woodworking
One trimester – One block

Fee: $15.00 to cover course materials
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To learn and apply skills necessary to prepare and finish small wood projects.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of projects which may include puzzles, dinosaur skeletons, and two or three dimensional objects.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.


INDUSTRIAL ARTS 7-2 - Scroll Saw Designs
One trimester - One block

Fee: $15.00 to cover course materials.
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To learn and apply skills necessary to prepare and finish intricate scroll saw projects.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of at least 3 scroll saw projects.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.


INDUSTRIAL ARTS 7-3 Rocketry and Basic Flight
One trimester – One block

Fee: $15.00 to cover course materials
Objectives: To learn and follow safe shop practices. To learn basic rocketry and flight concepts through the completion and successful launch of a model rocket and foam glider.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of rocket and glider.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION 7-3 Survival of the Smartest – Environmental Outdoor Ed.
One trimester - One block

Fee: $120.00 to cover consumable course materials (paper, camp stove fuel, etc.) and for a field trip at the end of the term.
Objectives: the “Survival of the Smartest” Enviro course is a basic introductory course designed to equip you with some of the many techniques and strategies you may use in a survival situation in the outdoors.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and self evaluation of projects. A module exam and notebook.
Required materials: Notebook and pen. Parent volunteers for field trips. On occasion students will also need to bring ingredients for some backcountry meals prepared in class on camp stoves.

SPANISH 7 Spanish – Level I (dependent on staffing)
One trimester - One block repeated each term

Fee: $5.00 to cover course materials.
Objectives: This course will provide students with an intermediate level of the language through the use of fun activities focused around both speaking and understanding.
Evaluation: Ongoing monitoring of in-class projects.
Required materials: Pen, pencil, eraser, ruler, scissors.

STUDY SKILLS 7
One trimester - One block repeated each term, but can be taken more than once depending on need.

Fee: $10.00 to cover course materials (this includes a memory stick.
Objectives: Students will focus on understanding themselves as learners while developing study and organizational skills. Extra class time and additional teacher help will be given to students to assist them to meet deadlines for classroom assignments and tests.
Evaluation: Marks will be based on participation, effort and completion of classroom assignments.

TECHNOLOGY - Introduction to Google Sketch Up 7
One trimester - One block repeated each term

Fee: $10.00 to cover course materials.
Objectives: Students will learn fundamental skills in Google Sketch Up including 2D image and 3D object creation.
Evaluation: Ongoing assignments, effort, and participation. This course will be graded as pass/fail.
Required materials: Memory Stick


TECHNOLOGY- Digital Tools and Applications 7
One trimester - one block

Fee: $5.00 to cover course materials
Objectives: Using online resources and various applications, students will explore video creation, story creation and a diverse number of projects. Students will be required to use an email address to sign up and access the websites used in the class.
Evaluation: This course will be pass/fail.
Required Materials: Memory stick



TECHNOLOGY - Digital Photography 7
One trimester - one block

Fee: $ 20 to cover course materials
Course Description/Objectives: Students will learn basic digital photography and computer editing skills. Using digital cameras, students will explore camera options and settings. Students will create a portfolio of digital images, both technical and artistic. If time, students will enhance/edit images using Photoshop or similar program.
Evaluation: Portfolio of ongoing work. This course is pass/fail.
Required Materials: Pen/Pencil

Yearbook 7 - Desktop Publishing and Design 1
One trimester - One block

Fee: $5.00 to cover course materials
Objectives: Layouts, picture taking and cropping, surveying, spreadsheets, drawing, typing, alphabetizing, publishing pages of the yearbook, merchandising and editing.
Evaluation: Rubric and exemplar assessment of work produced.
Required materials: Pen/pencil

Each student in Grade 7 will be enrolled in three complementary blocks per term. Band and FSL count as one block each term as they are full year courses.

- It is important that students have this selection form filled out completely by Wednesday April 25th, 2012.

- Please number your choices in order of preference for each term. Please select your choices with care as changes will be difficult and in some cases, impossible because of enrolment limits.

- Students who meet the deadline to return forms will be placed into options in random order after students choosing both Band and French are placed.

- Parents will be invoiced for fees in September when class lists are finalized. Fees are due at the end of September 2012. School Cash, our online payment system should be operational at that time for those who wish to pay their fees online.
