The Kalmar union started 1397 by the and ended 1523.

The union was between the kingdoms of Denmark,Norway,Sweden and Holstein and worked as a shield to stop the Germanic powers from advancing north.

The union was on the other hand was not always peaceful there were several rebellions from the Swedish nobles who had felt that they were underrepresented in the union and peasant uprising occurred after several tax increases that were unusually high at severlal times of distress for the union.

The beginning of the end was 1520 when the danish king Kristian II planned a massacre that would end the warring faction that existed in Sweden at the time in order to stabilize Sweden and be able to control the land properly,
but it backfired and instead Gustav vasa took up the fight and was able to grant Sweden independence that it has had ever since
