Team,

With fuel prices rising again it is time for us to remind our fleet drivers about ways to conserve fuel. The average U.S. price for regular-grade gasoline was $2.62 per gallon on June 8, was almost 60 cents per gallon higher than its price at the end of April. Regular-grade gasoline prices are expected to reach their summer seasonal peak in July, with a monthly average close to $2.70 per gallon. The annual average regular-grade gasoline retail price in 2009 is expected to be $2.33 per gallon, rising to $2.56 in 2010.

Dana Smith in Installation Services suggested that you can use www.gasbuddy.com to find the best prices for fuel locally.

Thanks for the suggestion Dana!

As before, there are several things we can do now to offset the increases to come. Below is a list of steps we can take now, before fuel prices peak.

Drive Sensibly
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.
Fuel Economy Benefit: 5-33%
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.12-$0.81/gallon

Observe the Speed Limit
While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.
You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon for gas.
Observing the speed limit is also safer.
Fuel Economy Benefit: 7-23%
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.17-$0.56/gallon

Remove Excess Weight
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.
Fuel Economy Benefit: 1-2%/100 lbs
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.02-$0.05/gallon

Avoid Excessive Idling
Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines.

Note: Cost savings are based on an assumed fuel price of $2.44/gallon.

Be sure to change air filters every 10,000 miles, keep tire pressures checked and inflated to manufacture
recommendations. Change oil and filters every 5,000 miles.

Think about this,
Every air filter we change ourselves saves the company and average of $15.00. Based on last 2008 statistics, this one step will save the company $12,500.00 this year for 5 minutes of effort.

Thank you for your participation,

Dan
