What is instant gratification?

It is trading long-term pleasure for short-term pleasure. For example:

• Eating donuts now instead of abstaining to lose weight in the long-term.

• Selling something cheap now instead of waiting for a buyer who will pay more.

• Yelling at someone now instead of thinking things through and delivering a more thoughtful response.

• Resting on the couch instead of working, exercising, organizing or doing something that will benefit your long-term future.

The desire for instant gratification is a problem for me:

Every day.

Often enough to consider it a problem worth solving.

Only rarely.

Never.

I understand specifically what causes me to indulge in instant gratification.

Yes

No

I think I understand, but my understanding doesn't solve the problem.

I don't know for sure.

I'm totally confused, actually.

When I indulge in instant gratification, I:

Think about the future consequences, but don't care.

Only think about what I want in the moment.

I don't know what is going on within me during those moments.

After indulging in instant gratification, I typically feel:

Worse than I felt before indulging.

Better than I felt before indulging.

Neither better nor worse - the same.

I was raised in an environment where self-control was:

Demonstrated and rewarded consistently.

Demonstrated and rewarded inconsistently.

Never demonstrated or discussed.

Punished.

Having a high level of self-control would require:

Very little additional self-awareness and effort. It's doable.

More self-awareness and effort than I have right now.

That I become a different person entirely.

I cannot imagine ever having the self-control I need.

Instant gratification prevents me from achieving long-term goals:

With my health.

With my family relationships.

In my career.

In my social life.

More than one of the above.

All of the above.

I am a

Male

Female

Desiring instant gratification at the expense of long-term goals is:

A conscious act of self-sabotage

An unconscious act of self-sabotage

Normal - just something to live with and not try to figure out

A purely biological phenomenon

By indulging in instant gratification, I am actually:

Fulfilling negative expectations of those around me. They have come to expect me to fail.

Causing myself to be seen in a negative light.

Inviting others to take care of me - or intervene in my life in some way.

Depriving myself of what I want the most.

Flirting with my own death.

More than one of the above.

All of the above.

If I overcame my desire for instant gratification:

It would change my entire life.

It would make a significant difference in my life.

My life wouldn't change in any significant way.
