One of the honors civics 7 classes considered what our school already does for academically struggling students, as well as researched and considered ways that we could further help these students, of all grade levels.
Your answers to the questions below will help us understand how you as educators feel about both what we're doing and what we can do to make our students more successful. ALL ANSWERS ARE FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY AND WILL BE USED FOR STATISTICAL PURPOSES ONLY.

A "Student Recognition" program could be set up whereby teachers recognize individually students who are most improved in their classes after each quiz or test, and submit names of most improved students to department heads either monthly or after each quarter. These students can then be recognized publicly, visually on posters/screens in the commons, and on the school's Web site. Perhaps even tangible rewards can be provided at some point, as donated by PTSA or some other organization. How effective do you think such a program would be? |

Similar to the "Big Brother/Big Sister" program used for 7th graders, an "Academic Mentor/Study Buddy" system could be set up whereby struggling students can be paired up through the guidance department with volunteer mentors or "buddies" who can serve as coaches. Mandatory meetings would need to be held between mentor and mentee. Mentor-coaches could possibly earn community service hours as well. How effective do you think such a system would be? |

Edutopia, a major educational resource provider, suggests "mandatory makeup sessions" for chronically underperforming students. A shared Google Docs spreadsheet would be created on which teachers enter names of students and their missing work, especially major assignments (essays, projects, labs, tests, etc.) A teacher or administrator in charge would notify students' parents that a mandatory makeup session is required the next day, with a reminder slip given to the student the last period of the day of the makeup. When the student attends the makeup and completes the assignment, it is handed in to the proctor, then the responsible teacher, who in turn removes the student's name from the spreadsheet. How effective do you think such a system would be if we used it? |

A "Reading Incentive Program" similar to Pizza Hut's "Book It" program, could be set up to reward students who read a predetermined amount of pages from valid, high-interest materials each month as tracked on a log sheet and signed off by a parent. If an outside organization is not involved, we could set up an internal reward system of parties or some other tangible reward system. Assuming that more reading translates to better reading skills and increased academic success, how effective do you think such a program would be? |

We could have professionals come in for periodic "Career Days" or "Career Fairs", and not just for juniors and seniors, but for younger students also, so students can gain a sense of what is required for success in the real world in various jobs. How effective do you think such a program would be in our school? |
