Gender, Sexual Assault and Intervention Strategies at UNSW

Hello:

What is this research study about?

You are invited to participate in this online research survey. The study aims to understand whether an individuals gender and their experiences of sexual assault at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) affect their view on the importance of sexual assault intervention programs. You have been invited to participate because you are a student at UNSW.

The research study is looking to recruit people who meet the following criteria: past or current students of UNSW.

Do I have to take part in this research study?

Participation in any research study is completely voluntary. If you don’t wish to take part, you don’t have to. Your decision will not affect your relationship with UNSW.

If you decide you want to take part in the research study, you will be asked to read the information carefully (ask questions via email if necessary) and complete the online questionnaire.

What does participation in this research require, and are there any risks involved?

If you decide to participate, you will be filling out this online survey that asks about your experiences on sexual assault at UNSW, focusing on attitudes towards intervention methods.

The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

There may be some risks involved due to content of the survey questions. Some questions ask you about personal experiences with sexual assault, which may be upsetting to you. You may discontinue the survey at any point. If you experience feelings of distress as a result of participation in this study you can contact the UNSW Counselling and Psychological Services, which is free of charge for students:

What are the possible benefits to participation?

The information we get from this research study will be used to learn about how gender, and sexual assault experiences may affect a persons view about sexual assault intervention programs. We hope to use information we get from this research study to generate new understandings of the ways that university students view sexual assault.

What will happen to information about me?

Submission of the online questionnaire is an indication of your consent. By clicking the ‘I Agree’ button you are providing your permission for the research team to collect and use information about you for student learning only. We will keep this data in a secure place for a period of seven years, which will then be wiped.

It is anticipated that the results of this research study will be published and/or presented in a variety of forums. In any publication and/or presentation, information will be published, in a way such that you will not be individually identifiable.

Any information obtained in connection with this research study that can identify you will remain confidential.  This project will use an external site to create, collect and analyse data collected in a questionnaire format. The site we are using is https://www.questionpro.com If you agree to participate in this study, the responses you provide to the questionnaire will be stored on questionpro to be accessed by Stephanie Gray.  No personal information will be collected in the questionnaire so none will be stored as data.

How and when will I find out what the results of the research study are?

You have a right to receive feedback about the overall results of this study. You can tell us that you wish to receive feedback by replying to this email and letting us know you would like to receive the results of the study. Feedback about the results will then be sent to your email address when the research is completed. This feedback will be in the form of a one page summary of our findings and links to any more detailed findings that are produced.

What if I want to withdraw from the research study?

Submitting your completed questionnaire is an indication of your consent to participate in the study. You can withdraw your responses any time before you have submitted the questionnaire, by simply closing the survey. Once you have submitted it, your responses cannot be withdrawn because they are anonymous and therefore we will not be able to tell which one is yours
.
