First-generation student participant survey

Hello:

My name is Kimberly McCurdy, and I am a doctoral student in the Instructional Management and Leadership Ph.D. program at Robert Morris University. Thank you for taking the time to complete this brief survey for consideration as a potential interview participant in my dissertation research on first-generation college students. I am looking for first-generation college students (those whose parents do not have a college degree), who attended a 4-year institution right out of high school and completed their bachelor's degree as a traditionally-aged student - approximately 22-24 years old. If your parents have some college or a certificate, you may still participate.

All answers to the survey will be kept confidential and will only be used by myself and my adviser, Dr. Mary Ann Rafoth at Robert Morris University, to determine participants for the study. If you are not selected, your information will be kept for a period of time (until the research has been conducted) under password protection and deleted when that time has passed. If you are selected to participate in the study, I will contact you to set up further communications and a meeting time. I will let you know either way.

Participants agree to participate in at least one, 60-minute interview which will be recorded. Participants may be asked to participate in follow-up questioning as needed for clarification. Recorded interviews will be transcribed, coded, and included in the final dissertation in the Appendix; however, identifying participant information will be deleted and participants will be identified as Participant 1, Participant 2, etc. Race and gender will be used as differentiators in the research, but no participant names, nor university names, will be identified.

All questions must be answered on this initial survey for participant consideration; however, if you are selected as a participant, you have the right not to answer a specific question that is asked, and you have the right to drop out of the study at any point.
