Ethnonyms

Hello - my name is Mike Pearce and I am a lecturer in English Language at the University of Sunderland.

You are invited to take part in a survey about names for groups of people in North East England. These words (like 'Cockney' and 'Scouser') are known as ethnonyms. I hope to make a map of these ethnonyms based on what the people who complete the survey think.

Your responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported anonymously.

1. In England there are a number of well-known words to label people from particular places (e.g. Cockney; Scouser). Which words like this do you know for people from different parts of the North East? Write down as many as you can (even if you think they are obvious) and if possible say which part of the North East they are associated with.

2. Have you heard any of the words you listed above used to describe the people from your hometown (the one you put at the start of the survey)? If so, write it/them here. If your hometown is not in North East England, what words (like Cockney or Scouser) are used for people from there?
