Hello - my name is Mike Pearce and I am a lecturer in English Language at the University of Sunderland.

You are invited to take part in a survey about names for groups of people in North East England. These words (like 'Cockney' and 'Scouser') are known as ethnonyms. I hope to make a map of these ethnonyms based on what the people who complete the survey think.

Your responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported anonymously.

If you would like to help with this project (the results of which will be presented online) please start the survey by clicking on the Continue button below. Participants will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win store tokens.

If you have any questions about this survey, please email [email protected].

Where are you from? When you answer this, you should put down your ‘home’ town or village – even if you don’t live there anymore (because, for example, you are living away from home while you study at university). Be as precise as possible (e.g. Westoe, South Shields).

What is the postcode for this location? (This is important because it will really help in the mapping process.)

What year were you born?

Are you male or female?

What is your occupation?

1. In England there are a number of well-known words to label people from particular places (e.g. Cockney; Scouser). Which words like this do you know for people from different parts of the North East? Write down as many as you can (even if you think they are obvious) and if possible say which part of the North East they are associated with.

2. Have you heard any of the words you listed above used to describe the people from your hometown (the one you put at the start of the survey)? If so, write it/them here. If your hometown is not in North East England, what words (like Cockney or Scouser) are used for people from there?

3. If you answered question 2, which of these labels do you think the majority of inhabitants of your hometown would prefer?

4. If you wrote something for question 3, would you use this label to describe yourself? If you would not use this label please explain why not.

5. If you need to clarify anything about your answers for 2, 3 and 4, please do so here.

6. You can use the space below to add any additional thoughts about the topic of this survey. I’d be really interested to know what you think about the way these words are used in North East England.
