Career Exploration Workshop (Jeff’s “This is Me” program) targeting exploration of careers for underserved youth. Having the event in a community setting, allowing vendors to display their businesses/services (possibly see if “free sessions” or services can be provided for raffle/giveaway). Have set keynote speakers for a panel Q&A allowing attendees to ask questions about professions, salaries, educational paths etc. Give each speaker a few minutes to discuss their careers and paths/backgrounds before opening up for the Q&A. We could do one panel or break it up into two panels (Example: a 12noon panel, 1pm slam dunk contest and a 2pm panel and a 3pm dance battle/show)àJust a random thought-this can be explored/planned more. As the event is going on, various vending stations can be set up for fundraising (EPC merchandise, face painting, games, food, etc.).  (Submitted by Delesta)

Prosocial Development Activity (from Hailey)

Rationale: Engagement in prosocial activities has been proven to reduce risk factors related to health, mental health, and risk of substance and alcohol use.

A.      Afterschool Activity fair: Rent a community center gym close to an at-risk neighborhood in Durham for a Saturday afternoon. Distribute fliers to market the event. Invite local vendors to rent low-cost booths (tables) to market their afterschool enrichment activities. Possible vendors may include: Boys and Girls Club, Parks and Rec, Free tutoring centers, low-cost or free athletic or art classes for children and teens. During the fair, a basketball competition can be held, with prizes given. Someone should also speak about the importance of connecting kids and teens to prosocial activities.

Life Skills activity (From Hailey)

Rationale: Teens from disadvantaged backgrounds often have difficulty envisioning positive futures for themselves.

A.      Job skills workshop: EPC could host an event where teens could register for a workshop where there would be onsite assistance with resume creation, mock interviews, and training on how to look for and apply to jobs. Hiring managers from local companies could also be invited to assist or give tips on what they look for in potential employees.

Mental Health Awareness activity (from Hailey)

Rationale: Many young people are exposed to trauma including community violence and crime, family members or loved ones who are murdered, addicted, or incarcerated, and may even be victims themselves of violence or neglect.

A.      EPC could host an event in a neighborhood heavily impacted by crime and violence. EPC could invite police officers to attend and speak at this event to help rebuild relationships within this community. EPC could present on the impact of trauma to provide education and resources for families affected. Local MH agencies could also be invited to take referrals and share about treatment options.

(Suggestion from Wendi)
“This is Me” program that Jeff suggested. I propose the event is held in Durham or Raleigh preferably at a location that already provides programs for youth (i.e., boys and girls club). The event would target inner city youth exploring multiple career options. Inviting a panel of individuals (at least 7) with diverse careers to educate the participants on their experience and paths to their chosen career.  I think incorporating fun activities such as a talent/fashion show, (i.e., dance, poetry, rap, singing) to further engage participants. For fundraising, food should be sold. To keep in line with our mission I think we should have pamphlets available with substance prevention information. Throughout the event, we should announce who we are and our mission.

Suggested timeframe: June or July
