San Francisco Bay Area:

Eco-Driving Behavioral Research

Consent to Participate in Research

Susan Shaheen Ph.D., Elliot Martin, Ph.D., and Rachel Finson, researchers at the Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) at the University of California at Berkeley invite you to take part in the study, San Francisco Bay Area: Eco-Driving Behavioral Research.

As a participant in this study you will drive your personal vehicle for eight weeks with an efficiency information device in your vehicle. You will turn on the device monitor at the beginning of each trip and turn it off at the end of each trip. If you do not turn the device monitor off when turn off your vehicle there is a risk that your car battery will run down. You will take two surveys on the Internet from your personal computer. Each survey will take 20-30 minutes to complete. The first survey will be before the efficiency information device is installed. You will receive a $25.00 gift card after you complete the first survey. The second survey will be at the end of your participation in the study (eight weeks). You will receive a $25.00 gift card after you complete the second survey. You will receive a final $50.00 gift card at the close of your participation in the study, when the efficiency device is returned to research staff. In total you will receive $100 in gift cards when you complete the study

The efficiency device will be installed in your personal vehicle by a trained member of the research team. It will take about 10 minutes to install. The device will be attached to the on board diagnostics (OBD-II) port of your vehicle and will not interfere with or affect the driving or safety of your vehicle. You will participate in a15-20 minute training after the device is installed to make sure you are comfortable with the device and how it functions. While you are participating in this study you should be the only person that drives your vehicle. If at any time while you are driving you are unsure of how to use the device, you should stop using it. When you are stationary you can review the manual and/or contact research staff for additional information. If you are not comfortable with the feedback display you do not have to turn the device on. If at anytime during the study you wish to have the device removed from your vehicle, a member of the project team will remove the device within 24 hours. It is important that you understand that viewing the efficiency device should not interfere with your safe driving. You are responsible to continue to drive safely at all times. The device is designed to provide efficiency information “at-a-glance,” similar to your speedometer. You should not view the efficiency device when you are maneuvering in traffic and should never focus your attention solely on the device. You should never make changes to the viewing screen while your car is in motion.

As a participant in this study, you will be asked to come to the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station three times during the study. The first two visits are expected to last about 30 minutes. The third visit is expected to last about 15 minutes. The first visit will be when you begin the study. The second visit will be after four weeks, and the third visit will be after eight weeks, at the end of your participation in the study. The Richmond Field Station is located at 1301 S. 46th St., RFS. The TSRC office is in Building 190.

Your total time for participating in the study is about 2 ½-3 hours. This includes taking two online surveys, coming to RFS three times, and turning the efficiency device on and off each time you begin and end a trip.

Researchers are conducting this study to better understand average drivers' experiences with the efficiency feedback device and the impact on driving efficiency. Researchers will ask for some personal information, but will mainly be interested in understanding driver experiences with the efficiency feedback device. Researchers will use this information to make recommendations on education and tactics to help drivers improve driving efficiency. You may learn new techniques to improve your driving efficiency.

Your survey responses will be coded and the key to the code will be stored in a separate location from the survey data. Every effort will be made to prevent the connection between the survey codes and the survey data. All data will be encrypted on hard drives using TrueCrypt.

All of the information that we obtain from you during the research will be kept as confidential as possible. We will store the completed surveys in a locked file or a secure computer. Your name and other identifying information will not be used in any reports of the research. After this research is completed, the surveys may be saved for use in future research by University of California and other alternative fuel deployment researchers. However, the same measures to protect confidentiality described above will apply to future storage and use of the materials.

Every effort has been made to protect the anonymity of the research participants. One research staff member will manage the names and identities of the participants. Another research staff member will manage the data.

The presence of aftermarket devices such as the one that will be installed in your vehicle may increase the likelihood of a break-in. However, it is not possible to determine the cause of a vehicle break-in. Therefore you, the research participant, assumes all liability in the event of a break-in and will file a claim with your insurance if you want to be compensated. The University assumes no liability in the event your car is broken into during your participation in the study. If the eco-way device is stolen while you are participating in the study you will be asked to provide a police report in order to receive the $50.00 gift certificate you would have received if you had returned the device at the end of your participation in the study.

Please remember that your participation in this research is voluntary. You may refuse to answer any questions and may stop taking part in the study at any time.

If you have any questions, you may telephone Rachel Finson, who is the Project Manager, at 510.725.7609 or contact her by e-mail at [email protected]. If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant, contact the office of the Committee for Protection of Human Subjects; University of California, Berkeley, 2150 Shattuck Avenue, Suite 313, Berkeley, CA 94704-5940; (510) 641-7461; email: [email protected].

Please consider the commute that you make to work most often during the week. For this commute only, please indicate the time that you spend travelling on the listed modes to get to work.

For example, if you bike 10 minutes to a vanpool pick up spot, then ride a vanpool for 30 minutes, and then walk 5 minutes to your work destination, you would put “10” in the 1st column next to “bike”, “30” in the 2nd column next to “vanpool”, and “5” in the 3rd column next to “walk”. Leave remaining and unused trip legs blank.
