You are invited to participate in the technology assessment for LAPD's Scientific Investigative Division (SID). This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.Your responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate.

The National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) has been requested by Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) through the Bureau of Justice Assistance to perform this assessment to review current technology utilized by SID that enhances LAPD’s laboratories’ capacity to conduct forensic testing. NFSTC will assess the status and impact of technology during an onsite visit scheduled for June 13-15, 2011. This survey is to gather data prior to the visit.

NFSTC conducts technology assessments at the request of the host agency. This is not a financial audit; it is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the laboratory’s capabilities to the requesting agency as part of a business improvement process tool. Upon completion of the assessment, a report is provided to the Bureau of Justice Assistance Program Office for review and dissemination to the requesting agency.

The objectives of the assessment include:

1. Identifying current technology utilized by each laboratory discipline
2. Identifying the current technology’s capacity to analyze casework
3. Identifying the direct/indirect costs of the current technology
4. Conducting a cost-effectiveness analysis
5. Conducting a cost-benefit analysis
6. Reviewing the agency’s procurement process
7. Identify challenges faced by the laboratory to meet the service expectations of your laboratory’s contributors.
8. Identify successful laboratory achievements as a result of the incorporation and implementation of technology enhancements.
9. Identifying the future vision of the implementation of new and innovative technology
