Dear expert in the field:

As part of my doctoral thesis I am working on the construction and validation of a social support sale. At this point in time we are looking at the content validity of the scale. As experts in the field (in the areas of stress, social support and self-determination theory) we would like to ask you to evaluate the content and format of the NBSSI (Needs Based Support Styles Inventory). It will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

The NBSSI was constructed in order to evaluate effective and non-effective social support from three different sources (immediate supervisor, colleagues and family/partner or friends). This scale is unique in that it assesses support from a Self-Determination Theory perspective. That is, we postulate that support which satisfies the three basic needs (needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness) should be more effective than support which thwarts these needs.

Specifically, you will be asked to: (1) Look at the questionnaire throughout without necessarily answering it (2) evaluate and comment on the format of the scale, (3) evaluate and comment on the instructions and the response scale, (4) carefully read the definition of each of the support styles and indicate which items correspond to which construct, (5) comment on the items, indicate to what degree the items are representative of the construct and whether other items should be included, (6) indicate whether you are aware of other similar support questionnaires and (7) provide other feedback.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Alexandra Van Veeren at 514-484-9576 or by email at the email address specified below. You can also contact Dr. Marc Blais by e-mail at [email protected]

Thank you very much for your time and support. Please click on the button Continue in order to start.

PLEASE LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE QUESTIONNAIRE BELOW IN ORDER TO HAVE A GLOBAL VIEW OF THE MEASURE BEFORE ANSWERING MORE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT IT IN THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS.

(3a) PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING DEFINITIONS OF THE SUPPORT STYLES CAREFULLY. BASED ON THESE DEFINITIONS YOU WILL BE ASKED TO INDICATE WHICH ITEM CORRESPONDS TO WHICH CONSTRUCT

Autonomy Centered Support Style

- style characterized by support behaviours which lead the person to feel that they have choices (freedom of choice), to feel a sense of ownership and to endorse their coping behaviours.

Competence Satisfying Support Style

- style characterized by support behaviours which increase feelings of competence and mastery. In particular, behaviours which help the person feel he/she has resources to deal with the situation even if that includes asking for help. In addition, behaviours which help the person acknowledge her/his capacities to analyze, understand and manage the situation himself/herself.

Relational Support Style

- style characterized by support behaviours which promote greater feelings of relatedness. In particular, behaviours which indicate that the helper is authentically available, ready to listen, is concerned with the person’s well-being, and genuinely wants to help.

Controlling Support Style

- style characterized by support behaviours where the person feels pressured to think, feel or act in a certain way. Advice giving is a typical example where the helper imposes a way of dealing with the situation and/or a way of managing stress.

Competence Thwarting Support Style

- style characterized by support behaviours where the person is made to feel as if he/she lacks the appropriate resources (knowledge, skills, abilities or traits) to deal with the situation. The person can feel incompetent, weak and helpless to achieve goals. For example, the person is made to feel that he/she cannot manage the situation and/or has lost control. Such comments focus on the persons’ weaknesses, victimization (blame) or the wrong things he/she is doing.

Non-Relational Support Style

- style characterized by distant/cold, non-authentic, distrustful, unreliable, rejecting and/or aggressive behaviours. For example, the helper may be indifferent, impatient, unavailable, unwilling to listen to the person, unwilling to try to understand the person and/or judgmental.
