Online Survey on “Communication needs and skills of adolescents studying in mainstream secondary schools in Hong Kong: Adolescents’ and speech therapists’ opinions”

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Wong Pui Yi, a year 5 student in BSc (Speech and Hearing Sciences) of the University of Hong Kong. The supervisor of this research study is Dr. To Kit Sum in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. The purpose of the study is to investigate Cantonese-speaking adolescents’ opinions on their communication needs and the skills and compare with practicing speech therapists who serve this group of client.
You will be invited to fill out the online survey to give your opinion on priority of communication needs and skills you would consider in treatment planning. The survey would only take you about 10 minutes to complete, and you can choose to terminate the survey at any time without negative consequences. The procedure has no known risks. There are no direct benefits to you. However, the research project can provide valuable information on the communication needs and skills of adolescents. This information might in turn help speech therapists to plan more functional treatment goals for adolescents.
I would like to stress that all information collected will remain strictly confidential.  Individual details will not be disclosed or identifiable from this survey. All of the obtained information will be encrypted with a password in a file that is known to the researcher only in the researcher’s personal computer and will be destroyed within 2 years after publication of first paper of the study. If you have any questions about the research, please feel free to contact Wong Pui Yi, Kary (6907-7149/ [email protected] ). If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, please contact the Human Research Ethics Committee, HKU (2241-5267).
