Hello fellow designer!

This survey is part of a research project that focuses on cloud collaboration tools and methods for designers - music and sound designers in particular.

I will ask you nine questions.

Questions will assess problems that occur when you collaborate on a design project (film, record, game, website, younameit).

These questions will be applicable even when you are not a (semi-)professional in the wonderful world of sound.

As a reward, I will give you a video of a singing cat in advance!

Please take some time to give accurate answers.

Thank you!
Friso

-Your participation in this study is completely voluntary.
-Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate.
-Your information will be coded and will remain confidential.

* In which of the following fields of design (in their broadest sense) are you a working (semi-)professional?

Select all that apply:

Visual media (film, documentary, animation)

Game design and/or development

Music production and/or sound design

Graphic design

Other

* Please allocate 100 points on how you usually work on a project:
With a fixed group of people
In a team assembled for the occasion
On your own
0
Values must add up to 100

How important are the following systems to your workflow when collaborating?
I don't use this Not very important Moderately important Very important I can't do without this
* Phone (calling, texting, etc.)
* Cloud services (like Dropbox, WeTransfer or Trello)
* E-mail
* Internet
* Work space (your customised environment and set of tools)

When you are using cloud during a project, what is its purpose?

Please allocate 100 points. If you don't use any cloud services, skip the question.
Creating (e.g. Ohm Studio, Cloud9)
Organising (e.g. Google Sheets, iCloud calendar, Trello)
Sharing project data with collaborators (e.g. video files, fonts, recordings, applications)
Sending specific project data to third parties (e.g. clients, partners, mum and dad, etc.)
Backup storage

Which of these cloud functions have caused problems for you in the past?

Creating

Organising

Sharing project data with project participants

Sending specific project data to third parties

Backup storage

When cloud services are used in a collaborative design process, to what extent are the following things a disturbance in your workflow?

Always a disturbance Usually a disturbance Usually not a disturbance Never a disturbance
* Version synchronisation problems (e.g. caused by simultaneously editing a single project file from different workspaces)
* Logistic problems (e.g. caused by transferring uncompressed video, sampled instruments, textures, etc.)
* Compatibility problems (e.g. caused by using different audio plugins, After Effects scripts, hardware, etc.)

To avoid version sync problems*, do you consider one of the following things a viable solution?

* e.g. caused by simultaneously editing a single project file from different workspaces
Never (No) Sometimes Always (Yes) I don't know
* Avoiding decentralised work spaces (e.g. people working from their homes during different hours)
* Extensive use of metadata tagging to keep track of versions and authors (using dedicated tools)
* Assigning some sort of 'master' authority that manually moderates synchronisation between 'slaves' (this could both be a computer or a human)

To avoid logistic problems*, do you consider one of the following things a viable solution?

* e.g. caused by transferring uncompressed video, sampled instruments, textures, etc.
Never (No) Sometimes Always (Yes) I don't know
* Manual synchronisation (using protocols like USB/FireWire/Ethernet/Thunderbolt)
* Downloading (using cloud storage or a NAS)
* Streaming data (if technically possible)

To avoid compatibility problems*, do you consider one of the following things a viable solution?

* e.g. caused by using different audio plugins, After Effects scripts, hardware, etc
Never (No) Sometimes Always (Yes) I don't know
* Determining a fixed combination of tools to be used in a project before anything is made with them
* Manually distributing tools to all participants, continuously adapting to project requirements
* Moving (some of) the required tools to a synchronisable environment that all participants can connect with
* Synchronising only the artefacts made with tools, so there is no need to synchronise work environments
