Valuation Query

For this question, we would like you to compare two hypothetical vehicles that you would be considering for purchase. The two vehicles are the same in terms of body style, features, and performance. One vehicle is more expensive to purchase but is more fuel-efficient, and thus it will save you money in fuel costs over time. “Model A” is the cheaper and less efficient one, and “Model B” is the more expensive and more efficient one. Model A gets 50 miles to the gallon, while Model B is 20% more fuel-efficient than Model A and gets 60 miles to the gallon. At current fuel prices, Model A has a fuel cost of $0.10 per mile versus $0.08 per mile for Model B. Your driving habits with the two vehicles are the same as they were before entering this study; there is no recharging with either vehicle.

Consider whether or not you would pay more for the “Model B” vehicle with improved fuel economy. If you would pay more, how much more would you pay? Consider the following table that lists many potential price differentials between Model A and Model B.

At each price differential, we would like you to indicate the probability with which you think you would opt for Model B over Model A. The price differential is only the difference in purchase price between the two vehicles; it does not account for the gasoline savings.

Please choose only one response for each row below.

If you are willing to pay more for fuel economy, what criteria would drive your decision? (Please select one response.)

I would only pay more for fuel economy, if overall, I saved more money than the premium of the more efficient vehicle.

I would pay more for fuel economy, if the gasoline savings (or discounted savings) broke even with the premium over time.

I would pay some premium for fuel economy, even if the gasoline savings (or discounted savings) over time did not entirely recover the premium.

* Please rank your main motivations for paying more for fuel economy than you expect to recover in savings? (Please rank 1 to 4, with 1 reflecting your top reason and 4 your least important reason.)
Reduce personal contributions to global warming
Spend less time at the gasoline station
Reduce personal contributions to foreign oil dependence
Reduce personal contributions to local air and water pollution
