Hey,

Thanks a mill for taking the time to check out this survey. I'm doing an essay for the writing module of my college course, and I've decided to write something on the topic of chivalry, feminism and sexism, so I'd like to find out what people's thoughts are.

You won't be asked to provide any details that might give away your identity, and if you decide you don't want to answer these questions, you can just exit the survey without submitting it, but if you were happy to answer these questions it would be really helpful for me!

Excellent. Now we can get down to business.

First, I'd like to ask the guys a question: If you saw your mother/sister/aunt/grandmother/cousin/mother-in-law/wife/girlfriend/female friend carrying something heavy, would you:

leave her alone and let her take care of it herself.

ask once if she'd like some help and, if she says no, leave her to it.

ask if she'd like some help and, if she says no, ask, "are you sure?".

insist on helping her if you can see that she's struggling, even if she says she can manage.

Next, a question for the girls:

If you were carrying something heavy, and a man offered to help, would you:

be insulted at the offer of help.

say no at first but then allow them to help.

accept their help with thanks the first time they ask.

Girls, do any of the following things bother you?
This bothers me Not Applicable - Guys, pick this option. This does not bother me
If a man offers to do the driving on a long-distance journey
If a man who is NOT a relative or loved-one calls you a pet name like "chick", "my dear", "love" etc.
If a man doesn't walk on the outside of the footpath
If a man holds the door for you
If a man uses the phrase, "ladies first"

Guys, do any of the following things bother you?
This bothers me This does not bother me Not Applicable - Girls, pick this option.
If girls ask you to reach for something on a high shelf rather than finding something for themselves to stand on
If a girl behaves as though she doesn't need you
If a girl is afraid of bugs/insects and asks you to get rid of one
If a girl gets served before you in a bar

Guys, what do you think of the traditional habit of the guy paying for the girls meal/drink/movie ticket when on a date?

I'm happy to pay for her drink/meal/movie ticket on most/all dates.

I will pay for some drinks/meals/movie tickets at the beginning, but once we've been on a few dates together then I would eventually expect her to pay for herself.

I don't think this is fair at all: If she has a job then why can't she pay for her own food/drink/cinema ticket?

Girls, pick this option to skip to the next question.

Guys, if you have any other comments on this, say it here.

I think it's only fair that I pay for my own meal/drink/movie ticket, since I have a job and can afford it.

Finally, what are your own thoughts? Do you think feminism has made it harder for guys to behave chivalrously to girls? Do you think chivalry is a form of sexism? Would you prefer if chivalry was still prominent in today's society? Say anything you like on the topic here.
